The coronavirus (COVID-19)

It is a legal requirement for every household in England and Wales to complete the census. We are still recruiting for census roles as the work we do is vital.

Where possible, we have adapted our ways of working to virtual events. Where this is not possible, we will follow all appropriate government guidelines to keep you safe while you work with us. You will receive the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and hand sanitiser. You will also receive training on how to work while adhering to social distancing measures so that you can perform the role safely and efficiently.

Officer roles

Census officer

Location - 26,500 roles across England and Wales
Salary - From £11.22 per hour dependent on location
Hours - 2nd & 3rd Intake; 15, 25 or 37 hours per week
Contract duration - 2nd Intake; 16 March to 29 April 2021, 3rd Intake; 23 March to 29 April 2021
Application window - 2nd Intake; 21 December 2020 to 11 February 2021, 3rd Intake; 4 January to 19 February 2021

If you like being out in the community and talking to people, this is the role for you. You will be working alone but with the support of your team and team leader. Knocking on doors, you’ll encourage residents to complete the census, making return visits when necessary.

Census coverage survey interviewer

Application window - 15 February to 19 February 2021

If you’re great at talking to people and you enjoy working in the community, this is the job for you. As part of a team, you will visit different addresses to interview residents. Sometimes, you will return several times to offer the reassurance they need to take part in the census.

Non-compliance assistant

Application window - 15 February to 19 February 2021

Can you be persuasive? Are you comfortable in challenging situations? If so, you could be just who we’re looking for. Working with a non-compliance officer, you will visit addresses where people have refused to complete the census, encouraging them to take part.

Census coverage survey mobile interviewer

Application window - 15 February to 19 February 2021

If you’re great at talking to people and you enjoy working in the community, this is the job for you. As part of a team, you will visit different addresses to interview residents. Sometimes, you will return several times to offer the reassurance they need to take part in the census.

Supervisor roles

Census coverage survey team leader

Location - 353 roles across England and Wales
Salary - From £13.01 per hour dependent on location
Hours - 37 hours per week
Contract duration - 13 April to 7 June 2021
Application window - 25 January to 2 February 2021

If you’re good at encouraging and motivating a team, this could be the job for you. You’ll manage around 12 interviewers who are knocking on doors, interviewing residents and making repeat visits. Simply, you’ll ensure they've the skills, tools and support they need.

Census coverage survey mobile team leader

Location - 9 roles across England and Wales
Salary - From £13.01 per hour dependent on location
Hours - 37 hours per week
Contract duration - 13 April to 28 June 2021
Application window - 25 January to 2 February 2021

Are you a natural team leader who’s happy to travel for work? In this role, you’ll co-ordinate a field operation around England and Wales. You’ll manage and motivate around 12 interviewers, as well as supporting other managers, going where your expertise is needed.

If you’re well organised and ready to deal with challenging issues, this could be the ideal job for you. Working with a non-compliance assistant, you’ll knock on doors and encourage residents to complete the census, when they've previously refused to take part.

Manager roles

If you’re skilled at managing both people and conflict, this could be the role for you. Overseeing five teams across a wide geographical area, you’ll travel to support colleagues as they visit different addresses, investigating refusals to take part in the census.
